What you need to know

THREE PERMIT TYPES: (1) Regular Trading Permit — for trading from a specific Council land location (parks, roads, reserves). Fee: $2,700/year (confirmed July 2026 — unchanged from January 2026). Pro-rata trial periods available and recommended for new operators. Yarra has no pre-set locations — Council assesses each site against guidelines. Cannot operate within 100 linear metres of an open food business (except outside their trading hours). Site cannot be near residential zones per Yarra Planning Scheme. Apply online at yarracity.vic.gov.au/business/permits-licences-and-registrations/mobile-food-truck-permits. (2) Private Function Permit — for catering at a specific private event on Council land (not open to public). Fee: $124 per permit. (3) Temporary Event Permit — for operating within a Council-approved prescribed event or festival (valid Event in Public Spaces Permit must be in place first). Fee: $409 per van (up to 5 vans); $409 per additional van over 5; free for not-for-profit operators. Event types: Major/Large Events and Recurring Markets via EOI (biannual/annual intake); Small/Medium Events via rolling applications (2 weeks–6 months lead time). ALL types require: FoodTrader registration, SOT lodged via FoodTrader before each event, current PLI. You are responsible for clearing all litter from around your site. Renewal notice sent November; paid by 31 December.
