What you need to know

TWO SEPARATE APPROVALS: (1) Mobile Food Vending Vehicle registration — required for vehicles selling food anywhere in Byron Shire LGA. Apply via forms at byron.nsw.gov.au/Council/Forms-and-certificates/Application-Form-Directory/Mobile-food-vending-vehicle-or-premises. Annual renewal, financial year basis. FEE STRUCTURE (2026/27, read by hand from the Council fees portal 2026-09-11): Class 1 (low risk — ice cream, coffee van): $244/vehicle. Class 2 (medium-high risk — van/trailer with potentially hazardous food): $511/vehicle. Class 2 with 6+ full-time employees: $668/vehicle. One-off event approval charged at 50% of annual fee. Mobile food catering business (high risk, food prepared off-site): $490. Mobile food catering business (low risk): $226. Inspection fee: $244/hour. THE MOBILE FOOD LINES ABOVE ARE THE 2026/27 AMOUNTS; THE TEMPORARY PREMISES AND URGENCY FIGURES BELOW ARE STILL 2025/26 AND WERE NOT RE-CHECKED ON 2026-09-11. (2) Temporary premises approvals for markets/events: one-year approval $195; one-year low-risk $66; one-off event $103. Urgency fee (within 7 days of event): $61.15 additional. EHO may inspect at any event — fee charged to event organiser at $244/hr. Trading on Council-managed beach or foreshore reserves may require additional Crown Lands or Council approval. Popular for Splendour in the Grass, Byron Bay Bluesfest, farmers markets. Food Safety Supervisor required for high-risk food. HOW BYRON SPLITS THINGS: there is no truck-versus-van distinction in this schedule at all - it splits by RISK CLASS, and this record maps truck to Class 2 ($511) and van to Class 1 ($244). A coffee or ice cream van is Class 1; anything handling potentially hazardous food is Class 2 whatever it is driven in.
