What you need to know
WHAT IT COSTS (confirmed 2026-09): the City of Adelaide mobile food vending permit has no flat annual fee. It is priced per day on the square metres your vehicle occupies, and the council publishes a fee calculator so you can work out your own number before applying. Add $52.50 per application if you want one towing vehicle covered, and $47.50 per inspection from 1 March 2025, invoiced after the visit, for both street and event trading in the council area. Permits are issued per vehicle — a business with several vehicles needs a permit for each. SA FOOD BUSINESS NOTIFICATION: free, one-time, lodged with the council where your vehicle is housed or where most food preparation happens. No annual renewal unless your details change. It is separate from the trading permit and one notification covers you across SA. WHAT YOU LODGE: a photo of the vehicle and set-up, a $20 million public liability certificate of currency noting City of Adelaide as an interested party, your food business notification, and written proof of a trade waste agreement with your local council or SA Water. WHERE YOU CAN TRADE: on-street only — event trading is arranged with the event organiser, not on this permit. Stay 25 metres from any open fixed food business and from other mobile vendors, unless you have written permission. No reserved or exclusive locations, first come first served. Prime locations (Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga, Hindmarsh Square/Mukata, North Terrace from King William to East Terrace) only once a week during 11am-3pm lunch trade, and no more than 4 hours in one spot. Setup no earlier than 1.5 hours before lunch trade in the City Squares. Up to six vendors in a City Square at once, on hard surfaces — not on the turf at Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga or Hindmarsh Square/Mukata. Not available at all: footpaths under 3.2 metres wide, Rundle Mall (concessions run through Rundle Mall Management Authority), Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Grote Street, East Terrace between North Terrace and Grenfell Street, King William Street between North Terrace and Victoria Square. VEHICLE: park in a bay signed for 1 hour or more, parallel to the footpath, never a 15 or 30 minute bay, loading zone, taxi rank or bus stop. Parking fees are waived while you trade. Serve from the footpath side only, keep clear of bike lanes, and be self-sufficient — no external power or water. The towing vehicle must not be parked next to the trading vehicle.
